Pets provide unconditional love and companionship for people of all ages—a fact that any pet owner can confirm. But scientific research also suggests pets help people control blood pressure and manage stress. Researchers have taken an interest in pets because controlling stress and blood pressure are vital keys to reducing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. A 2000 study, for instance, found that dogs help relieve cardiovascular stress in people who have had difficulty controlling their stress.

The study was just one of a series that demonstrated the positive health benefits of pet ownership. Dr. Karen Allen has led a team of researchers from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in a series of pet-related studies that began more than a decade ago. Their results have repeatedly demonstrated that people show a reduced stress response (i.e., less of a rise in blood pressure or heart rate) if their pet happens to be nearby. Pets comfort us when we face life’s many challenges.

The SUNY-Buffalo research team has also studied the effects of owning a pet on a group of hypertensive people who were caring for their brain-injured spouses. Half of the caregivers adopted a dog for six months. At the end of those six months, the new pet owners were reacting to stress better than they had before, and better than the caregivers who did not have a pet. The other half of the caregivers then adopted a dog. After another six months, all of the caregivers were reacting better to stress.

Research has found that health benefits are not limited to dogs or (by extension) cats. A study found that watching brightly colored fish swim back and forth in an aquarium helped calm people prone to disruptive behavior, such as children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Nursing homes in both the United States and Europe have documented the helpful effects of bringing in pets to visit the residents, and many people have benefited from therapeutic programs that allow them to interact with horses, dolphins, and other animals.

Exactly why pets can have a positive physiological effect is not clear, but experts have a number of theories. Research in general has shown that people tend to be healthier when they have a companion. In addition, studies have shown that people enjoyed more social interaction if they were accompanied by a dog. It may also be that people have an easier time reaching out to a person’s pet than a person! Pets bridge all communication gaps.

Effective Ways to Help Lower Hypertension

Diet

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s DASH diet, is a good model to follow. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The diet basically is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Fruits and vegetables provide fiber, magnesium and potassium, which are all important for arterial health. Specific fruits and vegetables such as canteloupes, prunes, raisins, bananas and potatoes are especially high in potassium. Potassium helps regulate the body’s fluid and salt levels. This, in conjunction with decreasing salt intake to no more than 1500mg a day, can effectively lower blood pressure readings by 10 points. Other foods that help lower hypertension include oatmeal, soy, and dark chocolate. Some Vitamins and supplements that may aid in lowering blood pressure include magnesium, fish-oil supplements, garlic and hawthorn. Dosages and efficacy may vary from individual to individual. Checking with one’s physician prior to taking these supplements is a must.

Lifestyle changes

There are several life-style changes that can help reduce hypertension. These include limiting alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, exercise and decreasing stress.

In some, alcohol raises blood pressure and heavy drinkers tend to have hypertension. Alcohol consumption should be limited to a drink a day. Smoking should be eliminated completely. Tobacco can include elements and compounds that contribute to the hardening of the arteries and the nicotine in cigarettes can cause blood vessels to contract, increasing the risks associated with high blood pressure.

Brisk exercise, consisting of thirty minutes a day, several times a week can help lower overall blood pressure. Although exercise can temporarily increase blood pressure during the activity, it does help lower overall resting blood pressure greatly. In addition, exercise promotes weight loss, reducing the amount of work that the heart has to perform. Checking with one’s physician prior to implementation of an exercise program is advised.

Stress can increase heart rate, which can lead to hypertension. Relaxation techniques and biofeedback methods are helpful to combat stress. These may include meditation, mind-body exercises, stress reduction training and things as simple as becoming involved with a hobby or getting a pet.

The numbers

Blood pressure consists of two numbers. The top number, systolic pressure measures blood flow at its highest pressure when the heart beats, while the lower number, diastolic pressure, measures blood flow when the heart is at rest. Although both numbers are important, the diastolic pressure reading is the one that concerns the most, because high pressure at rest can only go up when exertion is applied. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute maintains that a blood pressure of 120/80mg or lower is normal. Readings of 140/90mg or higher can indicate hypertension. It’s important to get checked regularly, not only by a physician, but also occasionally at home, by taking one’s own blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a silent killer. Regular checkups and home monitoring can diagnose this problem. Changes in lifestyle and diet can help control or lower hypertension. Consultation with one’s physician is necessary prior to exercise programs, vitamin supplement ingestion and the prescription of medications, if indicated.

Nitric oxide is a very simple molecule consisting of one atom each of oxygen and nitrogen. It should not be confused with nitrous oxide which is made up of two nitrogen atoms and is commonly known as laughing gas – once a common anaesthetic.

Outside of the body it often occurs as a pollutant with the potential for causing illness. Much of this pollution comes from car exhaust.

Chemical Nature of Nitric Oxide

Because it is a small and simple molecule, nitric oxide is particularly suited to its function as a chemical messenger both between cells and within cells, easily passing through cell membranes.

Its chemical structure also includes a double bond, this makes it a reactive compound, which means it reacts with other chemicals easily and breaks down quickly. This is a further attribute of a good chemical messenger in that it can quickly be got rid of. However, it is this reactivity that makes nitric oxide a pollutant in the environment.

Biological Role of Nitric Oxide

There is a great deal of research currently being carried out on the many roles of nitric oxide. Sometimes these roles seem contradictory for example in the case of apoptosis – cell death, with nitric oxide sometimes promoting the process and at other times inhibiting it.

Two major areas of physiological function have emerged as having a particular reliance on nitric oxide. These areas are control of blood vessel action and immune function.

Nitric Acid and Blood Vessels

The walls of blood vessels incorporate a thin layer of muscle. Like other muscles in the body this muscle can contract and relax in response to signals from chemical messengers.

Key among these is nitric acid which causes the muscle to relax and therefore dilates the blood vessel to allow more blood to flow. This is important to maintain adequate glucose and oxygen supply to various tissues and organs and to regulate blood pressure.

This function of nitric acid has therapeutic value. The nitrite drugs such as glyceryl trinitrite are used to treat angina. This drug is converted to nitric oxide in the body which in turn relaxes the blood vessels supplying the heart and thus eases the pain.

Nitric Acid and Immunity

Phagocytes are white cells which are central to immune function. They ingest bacteria and destroy them. Phagocytes can produce nitric oxide which is toxic to bacteria. An unfortunate side-effect of this is damage to the body's own cells as well. This is the one of the reasons that inflammation – an integral part of the immune response – is so painful: there is quite a bit of cell damage going on, our own and bacteria.

The reactivity of nitric oxide comes in here. Because it's so toxic to all cells it needs to be produced quickly when needed and rapidly destroyed when its job is done. The body has a number of control systems that regulate the switching on and off of toxic but necessary substances like nitric oxide.
Because of the central role of nitric oxide in inflammation research has looked at the possibility of using exhaled nitric acid gas as a marker for inflammation in certain conditions such as asthma, atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
